Coates 1989 HOBURNE, Domesday Book manor in Highcliffe All spellings except one suggest Old English 'hoh'='spur of land' as the first element. Since there is no marked hill there, we should consider relying on 1152 'Woburne' a common stream name representing hypothetical Old English 'Wohburna'='winding stream', as in 'Woburn' (Bedfordshire). However, there are no remarkable bends in the Bure Brook here. |
